NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Franck Sastre in Encounters: Nature and Culture. The exhibition opens March 13, 2018 and runs through April 3,  2018 with an opening reception on Thursday, March 15 from 6-8 pm. Color and sensation are nearly limitless in the works of Franck Sastre. Upon first glance, viewers are stunned by the variations in both line and texture that dominate his dynamic compositions. Powerful, female figures of modern society comprise the majority of Sastre’s subjects. Utilizing a variety of media, including black ink, pencil, collage, and watercolor on both wood board and canvas, Sastre renders women called ‘Azalee’, ‘Iana’, and ‘Makeda’ with freedom in color and pattern that advocate emotional vivacity over naturalistic expression. Alternations in both thick and thin lines marry with geometric shapes that seamlessly recall the works of Dali, Basquiat, and Kandinsky.   Inspired by the art of Sastre’s current residence in Spain, primary colors such as red, black and yellow often govern the palette of his compositions.  Throughout his oeuvre, Sastre imbues his subjects with pose and gaze that commands agency from the viewer. His figures are at once empowered, fearless, and graceful. The artist explains: “In my paintings, I see the people of my society in their different forms and colors, and I hope that my viewers feel the same admiration for this culture that I do.”   Exhibition Dates: March 13 - April 3, 2018 Reception: Thursday March 15, 2018 6-8 PM Gallery Hours: Tues-Sat 11:00am – 6:00pm Gallery Location: 530 West 25th Street, New York, NY Event URL: https://www.agora-gallery.com/artistpage/Franck_Sastre.aspx   Featured Artists: Ellen Cuylaerts | Elena Gastón Nicolás | Daniel Loveridge | Zie Otto | Michael Victor ª MVR | Franck Sastre   About the Exhibition Encounters: Nature and Culture Encounters: Nature and Culture features six artists whose works highlight the underlying presence of subjectivity in all objective understanding. Starting with the depiction of realistic figures — be these painted or photographed — each work shows us how the hand of the artist ineluctably deviates from purely factual descriptions, delineating a world of imagined truth.
